Below is our COVID-19 plan for 2020. This plan is subject to change depending on current conditions, government requirements, USA Triathlon requirements, and other factors.

Last updated: 6/29/2020

Sprint Distance only: We have dropped the Olympic distance race for 2020 due to complications caused by COVID-19. It was a hard choice but is the best choice for this year. If you signed up for the Olympic distance we will transfer you to sprint distance if you are racing in 2020. If you choose to defer to 2021 we will keep you in the Olympic distance for next year. More details will be emailed to those affected.

Adding a duathlon option: Since pools have had limited availability we have added a duathlon option which replaces the swim section with a short run. This is not replacing the triathlon it is just an alternative for those that haven’t been able to do swim training.

Screening:

  • Each athlete will need to complete a CDC self-assessment questionnaire and submit answers electronically the day before the event (instructions will be given to athletes prior to race day)
  • Anyone with symptoms will be instructed to stay home or go home
  • There will be a temp check upon arrival to the Transition area or race site
  • All race staff and volunteers will complete the screening process
  • Parents of minor children attending the race will also to need complete screening

Increased hygiene and sanitation

  • Athletes must wear a mask or face covering while not racing including when setting up in transition
  • Staff and volunteers will also be wearing a mask or face covering
  • Increased ratio of portable toilets to people
  • Portable toilets spread out (not in a cluster)
  • Hand washing stations and/or sanitizer stations spread throughout the site
  • Dedicated crew member to clean and sanitize during the race

Logistical Changes:

Packet pickup:

  • Mandatory Packet Pickup on Saturday July 25 (exceptions can be granted for those that need to pickup on race morning)
  • Packet Pickup will be outdoors and socially distanced
  • No expo/sales at packet pickup this year
  • No new registrations on race day or at packet pickup the day before

Parking, spectators, body marking, water stations

  • Athlete Parking has been moved to the North lot so that participants can leave as soon as they are done (the south lot would not allow for this)
  • No spectators unless it is a parent of an athlete 17 or under (parents/spectators need to wear a mask or face covering while at the race)
  • Water stations on the run course will have sealed bottles of water only
  • Athletes will body mark themselves before coming to the race.

During race:

  • Time Trial start – one person will start every 5-10 seconds (No wave starts)
  • Increased space between bike racks in transition
  • Reduce the bikes per rack from 6 to 2 or 3 (athletes alternating sides of the rack)
  • Assigned/numbered transition spots
  • Leading up to the start line cones will be spaced at 6ft or more. 1 person or household per cone. As the first person starts each person will move up one cone. Process repeats until it your turn to start
  • Separate entrance and exit for beach area (one way traffic)

Post Race

  • Post-race food will be to-go style
  • Results are online only (no awards ceremony).  Awards will be available at a sponsor location (TBD) starting at 1pm on race day Sunday July 26, 2020.
  • No chiropractor or massage staff at the race
  • We will have a side entrance to transition for people to enter and get their things right away after finishing
  • After athletes have recovered we would like them to gather their things, get a to-go food bag, and head back to their vehicles
